Are you getting enough water?

There’s nothing much more refreshing than a nice tall, ice-cold glass of water. Sometimes, a simple glass of water can be more even more satisfying and refreshing than a cup of coffee or a can of soda. Though despite this, too many of us don’t drink enough water on a daily basis. By depriving ourselves of the world’s most natural resource, we are continuously damaging our bodies.

You could survive for a month without food, but you’d be dead in a week without water – it is vital. If knowing all this makes you think staying hydrated might be a good idea, here’s a couple of simple tips to get you drinking water on the regular.

1. Drink and drive (no, not like that!)

Buy a reusable bottle and keep it in your car. Sipping on it as you go about your day can add up depending on how much you drive; and if you find yourself stuck in a traffic jam, at least you’ll be hydrated. Though make sure to clean the bottle regularly and do not leave it in direct sunlight.

2. Add some flavoring

3. Try to keep it simple

I know the often repeated recommendation of “drink 8 glasses of water a day” might sound like a lot, but it’s really not. Just try to make a habit out of drinking water at these times:

  • As soon as you wake up (dehydration results in brain fatigue, so let’s avoid that
  • Before every meal (hunger can be thirst in disguise, so this might even prevent over-eating)
  • Before bed (though not so close that you’ll wake up needing to pee)

Your ideal intake could be more or less than the recommended 8 glasses. This depends on a variety of things such as your activity level, weight and body composition – so it is okay to experiment and figure out what is ideal for you. Usually you will find that some days you will need more water and some days not as much.

4. Think about the money you’ll save

If I’m sweating a lot because of exercise or just because it’s hot, I also put a pinch of sea salt in my water bottle.
